BetterBricks & Lighting Design Lab
Lab Networking Resource
BetterBricks, in partnership with the universities and electric utilities across
the Northwest, supports this regional network of design assistance labs. The lab
network serves as a technical resource of credible and unbiased information and
education to facilitate integration of energy efficient design to achieve high
performance buildings.
The labs help building professionals take advantage of the design and financial
benefits of energy efficiency to create more productive and comfortable work
environments. Each lab can provide a variety of services that include:
information on tools and resources available, consultations on climate analysis
and appropriate building responses, design consultations for daylighting and
electric lighting, and daylighting modeling. Some labs offer additional services
such as consultations on HVAC system integration and energy analysis.

Very Efficient HVAC Systems May Qualify for Tax Deductions
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) provides potentially significant tax
deductions for energy efficient HVAC systems installed in new and existing
buildings. But there is a caveat: To qualify for the deduction, the HVAC system
must reduce energy costs by at least 16.67 percent compared to HVAC systems
designed to meet ASHRAE 90.1-2001.
Under current law, the project must be placed in service between Jan. 1, 2006
and Dec. 31, 2008 to qualify for EPAct tax benefits. There are efforts in
Congress to increase the tax deductions and extend EPAct through the 2012 tax
year and through 2014 for projects certified as of 2012.
